Cancer screening is the first defense against cancer. Screening tests for early detection of cancer may include self-examinations, physical examinations by a health professional, X-rays or laboratory tests. Screenings are meant to be routine tests done before any warning signs are present. Lutheran HealthCare offers numerous cancer screenings including colon, breast, cervical, prostate, skin and more.

Breast Cancer Screenings

The Lutheran Family Health Centers Network has been providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings since 1997 in collaboration with the Brooklyn Breast Health Partnership. Lutheran provides outreach and education as well as cancer screenings and treatment to over 1000 women a year throughout Brooklyn.

Free or reduced cost Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings are provided to women who are uninsured or underinsured and have low income. Call 718-630-7000 for additional information.

Colon Cancer Screenings

Colon Cancer occurs when malignant cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control and take over healthy cells. Colon cancer screenings are provided to men and women over the age of 50 and to those who have family history of colon cancer or other risk factors. Lutheran Family Health Centers Network also partners with the American Cancer Society in our quest to bring awareness and free screenings for colon cancer.

Prostate Cancer Screenings

According to the American Cancer Society, both the PSA Blood Test and Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) should be offered annually, beginning at age 50, to men who have at least a 10-year life expectancy. Men at high risk, such as African American men and men with a strong family history of one or more first-degree relatives diagnosed at an early age, should begin testing at age 45

Skin Cancer Screenings

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of skin cells. If left unchecked, these cancer cells can spread from the skin into other tissues and organs. There are three common types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma.A licensed health care professional is the only person who can determine if you have a form of skin cancer.
