Lutheran Medical Center's ambulatory surgery service performs more than 100 different surgical procedures for approximately 10,000 patients each year. Some of the most commonly performed procedures are hernia, cataract, and foot surgery; laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), tubal ligation and hysteroscopy. Lutheran provides its full range of services using state-of-the-art surgical equipment. The staff of highly trained, skilled professionals cares not only for patients' medical needs but their psycho-social concerns as well, with great sensitivity to issues of privacy, language and physical comfort. Once a procedure has been scheduled, the department provides all the services patients require from pre-admission testing to post-operative discharge planning. Registered nurses provide follow-up care by contacting each patient by telephone 24 to 48 hours after surgery, to ensure that recovery is progressing successfully. Most of Lutheran's surgical patients are admitted through this department and undergo pre-operative nursing assessment there.
