Lutheran's Stroke Center Provides Life-Saving Care

When someone is having a stroke, every second counts. "The sooner a stroke patient receives treatment, the greater his or her chances are of surviving and recovering," says Salman Azhar, M.D., director of the Stroke Center at LMC.

Five Major Signs Missed
Unfortunately, nearly four out of five people don't know the top five signs of a stroke - nor do they know the first step to take to help a stroke victim. Being able to spot these early signs could mean saving someone's life. They are:
1. Confusion or trouble understanding or speaking
2. Numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
3. Vision problems in one or both eyes
4. Dizziness, loss of coordination or difficulty walking
5. Severe headache with no known cause

"We have a three-pronged approach to treating patients at the Stroke Center," Dr. Azhar says. "First, we rapidly assess the patient to confirm that he or she is having a stroke and determine what type of stroke it is. Next, we provide immediate intervention, such as administering clot-busting medication if possible. Finally, we provide comprehensive rehabilitation."

Getting Back to Your Life
Life after a stroke can be challenging for patients, depending on how much damage their brain has endured. Lutheran's stroke team is committed to providing state-of-the-art rehabilitation services to help patients recover their physical and mental abilities. These techniques may include neurological rehabilitation exercise, treadmill suspension therapy, Botox© injections and acupuncture.
