NEIGHBORS ANSWER CALL TO ACTION AT PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY FORUMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEIGHBORS ANSWER CALL TO ACTION AT PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY FORUMS

March 1, 2011, Brooklyn, NY…The Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood recently held two community forums and received tremendous support from neighbors. The forums were designed to get input from local residents on how to improve educational and social support for young people in Sunset Park. At the forums, residents participated in a community asset mapping activity, brainstorming the services and resources that would exist in an "ideal neighborhood." The activity was simultaneously interpreted across four languages— Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and English—and helped community residents share their ideas in a unique, multilingual setting. Groups discussed current strengths and identified challenge areas in the community.

The forums, attended by over 200 people, are part of a year long planning process supported by the Department of Education. The next phase of the Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood will be focus groups centered on the four key areas of the project - early childhood, academics, health, and community/family - as well as a broad community needs assessment that will engage residents of all ages.

The Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood is an exciting new project in Sunset Park. It seeks to join existing resources in the neighborhood to support children, strengthen families and create a healthier community. The goal of Promise Neighborhoods is for all children in the community to have strong schools and strong systems of family and community support. In a Promise Neighborhood, children are educated well and are able to move successfully through public school, into college and onto careers.

Lutheran Family Health Centers' Department of Community Based Programs is facilitating the Promise Neighborhood planning process. If you are interested in participating in the project or would like to more information, please contact Alyse Erman at aerman@lmcmc.com or Stacie Evans at sevans@lmcmc.com of the Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood or call 718-210-1102.
