LFHC CALLING ON NEIGHBORS TO HELP BUILD A “CRADLE-TO-CAREER” PATHWAY FOR OUR CHILDREN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LFHC CALLING ON NEIGHBORS TO HELP BUILD A "CRADLE-TO-CAREER" PATHWAY FOR OUR CHILDREN
Promise Neighborhood community forums to be held in February

January 27, 2011, Brooklyn, NY…The Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood, a federal initiative being facilitated by Lutheran Family Health Centers' (LFHC) Community Based Programs, is asking for neighborhood input on how to make Sunset Park a better place to live and learn. Community-wide discussions will be held on Saturday, February 5 (11:30 a.m., at P.S. 24, 427 38th Street) and Tuesday, February 8 (6:30 p.m., at I.S. 136/M.S. 821, 4004 4th Avenue) for residents to take an active role in helping to plan the new Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood project.

The Sunset Park Promise Neighborhood is an exciting, new project in Sunset Park. It seeks to join existing resources in the neighborhood to support children, strengthen families and create a healthy community. As this is a planning year for the project, these forums will provide residents an opportunity to discuss strengths and needs in the neighborhood, as well as ideas for solutions.

The goal of Promise Neighborhoods is that all children in the community have strong schools and strong systems of family and community support. In a Promise Neighborhood, children are well educated and able to move successfully through college into careers. In Sunset Park, we will work with residents and local organizations to create a plan that proposes support and services to help children from birth to adulthood. Our Promise Neighborhood planning project will work in the 50-block area between First and Sixth Avenues and 33rd and 43rd Streets. We will meet and talk with residents to identify and understand community strengths and needs and to develop ideas for solutions.

Interpretation services will be available in Arabic, Spanish and Chinese, as well as free snacks and childcare.
