February 8, 2008, Brooklyn, New York…In partnership with the American Heart Association, Lutheran HealthCare staff launched heart month activities with its fourth annual "Wear Red Day." As part of Lutheran's 125th anniversary year, 125 staff members and visitors gathered to help ring in the special month. Lutheran employees also raised $1,250 in donations for the American Heart Association.

On National Wear Red Day, people across the country are encouraged to wear red and make a donation to help battle heart disease in women -- heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in women in the U.S.

Throughout February, Lutheran HealthCare affiliates will continue to host events and healthy living workshops to underscore the importance of healthy living in battling cardiovascular diseases, including stroke. Each event is free and open to the public. Call the External Affairs Department for a list of upcoming community events or visit

Lutheran HealthCare recommends following four simple guidelines for a healthy heart:

· Exercise daily
· Develop good eating habits
· Avoid tobacco, drugs, and excessive alcohol
· Take advantage of preventive screenings to detect problems early

Adapting healthy lifestyles can control many of the factors that lead to heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and obesity. Speak to your primary care physician to learn how you can start living healthier. If you would like to find a health center in your neighborhood, or for a referral to one of our physicians close to your home, call 718-630-RXRX.
