In honor of Blood Donor Awareness Month and Lutheran's 125th Anniversary Lutheran

January 9, 2008, Brooklyn, New YorkGive the gift that keeps on giving and donate blood this month. In honor of Blood Donor Awareness and Lutheran's 125th Anniversary Lutheran Medical Center is looking for 125 blood donors. All donors will be entered into a raffle to win fabulous prizes.

Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, weather and illness. January, in particular, is a difficult month for blood centers to collect donations. A reduction in turnout can put our nation's inventory at a critical low. By donating you are helping to ensure that blood is readily available when needed. Your donation can save the life of a child, a friend, yourself or a complete stranger. Walk-ins are welcome. The Lutheran Medical Center Blood Donor Room is located at 150 55th Street, Brooklyn and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information please contact Phyllis Holvik at 718-630-8900.

Anniversary festivities are planned throughout 2008 and include a 125th Anniversary Community Outreach Series of lectures, screenings, education and prevention opportunities. Every 125th baby born at Lutheran Medical Center will receive a special gift and a chance to win a $1,250 savings bond. Lutheran will also host its 125th Anniversary Dinner Dance at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers on May 10, 2008. The annual black tie event was a smash success last year, with more than 900 partygoers who helped raise nearly $1 million for health programs and services.

Today, in 2008, that commitment and devotion to a community's overall "health" remains as strong as ever. The new Lutheran HealthCare remains a leader in community-based health with one the of the country's largest federally qualified health center systems, hundreds of subsidized housing units for seniors, a family support center that provides free job training, English classes, reading and Even Start programs. The medical center continues to redefine the "community hospital" concept with the area's only Level I Trauma Center, a N.Y.S. designated regional stroke center, a bariatric surgical institute, and more.

A Level I Trauma Center and Stroke Center, Lutheran Medical Center (LMC) has cared for Brooklyn communities since 1883. As a full service 476-bed teaching hospital, LMC is the hub of Lutheran HealthCare, a network of primary, acute and long-term care centers in southwest Brooklyn. The LMC Surgical Weight Loss Institute is the only program in Brooklyn to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery while also holding a Level 1 Accreditation from the American College of Surgeons.
