October 25, 2007, Brooklyn, New York…Lutheran HealthCare's Domestic Violence (DV) Taskforce recognized Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its "Stop the Violence" symposium on Tuesday, October 23. Guest speakers included Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, Cynthia Williams from the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sabra Jackson, a survivor from the Voices of Women Organizing Project.

Lutheran HealthCare employees teamed up to create the DV taskforce in memory of Karen Skellas, a longtime employee who lost her life to domestic violence last year. The symposium was held in her honor and attended by her daughter, Angela Skellas.

Lutheran's "Stop the Violence" event was an opportunity to discuss the impact of family violence in Brooklyn. In addition, a number of community based partner's provided information about their services; Lutheran Family Health Centers' Family Support Center, HealthPlus, Trinity Healing Center, CONNECT, Park Slope Safe Homes Project, New York Asian Women's Center, Voices of Women Organizing Project (V.O.W.), Safe Horizons (DV Advocate from 72nd Precinct), New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the Brooklyn District Attorney's Family Justice Center.

The taskforce is comprised of a group of Lutheran HealthCare employees - social workers, nurses, doctors, psychologists, administrative and frontline staff – committed to providing quality care and services to victims of domestic violence. The DV Taskforce is designed to strengthen Lutheran's ability to identify, assess and provide appropriate interventions for both patients and staff who are victims of domestic violence across the system.

Working in collaboration with the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, Lutheran's DV Taskforce has drafted policies and is developing trainings. The group has taken information collected from more than 250 staff surveys and subsequent focus groups, a cross section of employees throughout Lutheran HealthCare. Also a group of Lutheran employees has volunteered to be trained by the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence to facilitate employee discussion luncheons throughout the network for employees. The luncheons will serve as a forum to share information and resources on domestic violence.
