IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY, LUTHERAN FAMILY HEALTH CENTERS WILL OFFER FREE RAPID HIV TESTS AND COUNSELING SERVICES
Note to editors: Lutheran Family Health Centers will join OraSure Technologies and other national and community-based organizations to ring the NASDAQ Stock Market bell on National HIV Testing Day, Wednesday, June 27. This event will spotlight the importance of this annual observance, as well as the collective support of OraSure, the government, the media and HIV/AIDS organizations to increase HIV testing and awareness nationwide.

An HIV test is the only way to find out if you are HIV positive. That's why the Lutheran Family Health Centers network encourages the community to take advantage of its confidential HIV counseling and testing. LFHC's offers the OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test at all nine health center sites.
Testing for the HIV antibodies with OraQuick Advance requires only a drop of blood taken from a finger prick or a simple swab of the gums. The test provides results within 20 minutes enabling you to find out your results during the same visit. It is over 99 percent accurate.
A person can be infected with HIV but it could take as many as 10 years before they begin to show symptoms. That's why it's important to get tested as soon as possible. New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advancing HIV Prevention Initiative, urges HIV testing to be recommended as a routine part of medical care and other services.

Brooklyn has more people who have been diagnosed with AIDS (32,937) than 45 states. It also has more children diagnosed (705) than 47 states.

The Lutheran Family Health Center network is the ambulatory health care delivery system for Lutheran Medical Center. This community-based system provides a comprehensive array of primary and specialty services with more than 600,000 outpatient visits a year. The network includes nine full-time community health centers (located in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Park Slope and Flatbush), eight medical partnerships, eleven school based health centers and community programs, including three WIC programs, adult and family literacy programs, two child care centers and a family wellness center to serve those affected by the September 11th tragedy.
