LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER IS RATED THE BEST IN THE BROOKLYN-STATEN ISLAND AREA FOR OVERALL ORTHOPEDICS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER IS RATED THE BEST IN THE BROOKLYN-STATEN ISLAND AREA FOR OVERALL ORTHOPEDICS
Patients are 47% less likely to have complications

May 14, 2009, Brooklyn, New York…Lutheran Medical Center announced today that it has received a top five-star rating for spine surgery, and is best rated in the Brooklyn-Staten Island area for overall orthopedics, by HealthGrades, an independent health care ratings company. Lutheran Medical Center has been rated the best in overall orthopedics for three of the past four years.

According to HealthGrades' latest 2009 Hospital Quality in America study, Lutheran Medical Center is:

· Best Rated in the Brooklyn-Staten Island Area for Overall Orthopedic Services (2006, 2007, 2009)
· Five Star rated for Spine surgery (3 years in a row)
· Five Star rated in Back and Neck Surgery-with Spinal Fusion (4 years in a row)
· Ranked #8 in New York for Overall Orthopedics

"To be named one New York State's top ten hospitals for orthopedic surgery means that we are succeeding in our mission of providing the highest quality services for our community," said Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO, Lutheran HealthCare. "This is just more evidence, that in these difficult times for health care, Brooklyn can count on Lutheran to continue to provide the best possible care. We are very proud of our talented and dedicated staff, and the entire surgical team."

As part of the nation's most comprehensive, independent analysis of hospital quality, HealthGrades found that patients treated at five-star rated hospitals for nine common procedures are 47 percent less likely to experience a major complication, such as post-operative infections or heart conditions, which can lengthen their hospital stay and increase costs. According to the study, if all Medicare patients had been treated at a top-performing hospital during 2005-07, more than 123,000 major complications potentially could have been avoided.

In developing its 2009 health care quality ratings, HealthGrades analyzed more than 41 million Medicare hospitalization records from 2005 to 2007 at 5,000 hospitals. Those with outcomes that are above average to a statistically significant degree receive a five-star rating. These top performing hospitals, like Lutheran, have several similar qualities: 1) A culture that promotes transparency and a commitment to the patient, 2) The practice of evidence-based medicine, 3) A focus on quality driven by the hospitals' leaders and practiced by each and every employee.
