LMC STAFFERS ON MEDICAL MISSION

LMC STAFFERS ON MEDICAL MISSION

Screening/OR schedules were finalized Sat. after 5 pm and Jose notifies patients.

April 24, 2009, Brooklyn, New York...Jose Hernandez, M.S., R.N., VP surgical services, and Donald Gibbs, LMC operating room technician, are currently in Cotui, Dominican Republic supporting the Medical Mission Group, an organization of volunteer medical professionals dedicated to bringing surgical intervention to individuals throughout the world who lack sufficient access or the financial resources to obtain medical care.

The team arrived on April 17 and at the midpoint, has already screened more than 250 patients and performed 172 operations. Procedures range from corrective operations for cleft palates, cleft lips, gall bladders, hernias, and more. Patients range from three months old to 65 years.

On April 22, Lutheran's newsroom spoke to Jose on the ground in Dominican Republic. "It's been an amazing trip so far. Everyone is so grateful and appreciative that we are there to help. They otherwise may not have been able to afford these much needed surgeries," he said. Jose and fellow LMC staffer Donald Gibbs expect to operate on at least 250 patients during their 10-day medical mission.
