REVEREND DR. SAMUEL FOOK WONGCOMMUNITY LEADER AND ADVOCATE, ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF THE SUNSET PARK HEALTH COUNCIL
March 6, 2009, Brooklyn, New York
The Lutheran Family Health Centers network is pleased to announce that Reverend Dr. Samuel Fook Wong has been elected as the new president of the Sunset Park Health Council, Inc., the health center network's governing board. Wong, a council member since 1994, previously served as vice president and is a well-known and highly regarded Brooklyn community leader. He succeeds outgoing president, Violeta Maya, who will continue to serve as a member of the council.
"Reverend Wong is perfectly suited to help guide the Lutheran Family Health Centers through a particularly challenging time," said Larry K. McReynolds, executive director. "With hospitals and health centers in New York experiencing one of the most demanding budget periods in history, it's important that our local community knows that the Lutheran system is positioned strongly to continue expanding services and increasing access to quality health care in Brooklyn neighborhoods."
"I look forward to working closely with the health center's administration to expand and grow critical community health services," said Reverend Wong. "In this economy it's even more imperative that the Brooklyn community and the health network work as a team to make sure we are responding to the evolving and changing needs of our neighbors."
Reverend Wong is pastor and founder of the Chinese Promise Baptist Church and is a highly regarded member of the Sunset Park community. He currently serves as the chairman of the Eighth Avenue Community Coalition, is a member of Community Boards seven and 10 and is a member of the Lutheran HealthCare Board of Trustees. He earned a doctorate in ministry from the New York Theological Seminary, a master's of divinity from the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary, and a bachelor's degree from the Hong Kong Baptist University of Arts.
As a longtime community leader and public advocate, he was founder and director of the "Summer Street Fair" on 8th Avenue and also helped to coordinate a reduced fare MTA program for seniors. He holds positions with many religious and faith-based organizations including the Baptist Convention of New York (director of the board), the Metropolitan New York Chinese Christian Churches Association (president) and the Chinese Coordination Center of World Evangelism (president). He also served as the 66th Precinct's police clergy liaison from 1993 to 2003, assisting crime victims and helping to foster a closer working relationship between the community and police department.
The Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC), based in Sunset Park, is a federally qualified community-based ambulatory health care system affiliated with Lutheran HealthCare. Governed by the Sunset Park Health Council, Inc., LFHC is one of the largest health center networks in the country serving as southwest Brooklyn's medical home for more than 40 years. With eight full-time community health centers, 15 school-based health centers and community programs, including three WIC programs, adult and family literacy programs, three child care centers and a family wellness center, the network is the primary medical provider for 91,000 people providing more than 550,000 patient visits per year.
