Claudia Lyon, D.O., Chair, Department of Family Medicine and Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program
The first family medicine residency program in New York City and one of the first in the nation was opened at Lutheran Medical Center in 1970. The medical center's dedication to family medicine is rooted in a number of fundamental beliefs. Lutheran Medical Center believes that family medicine is the medical specialty best suited to meet the health care needs of individuals, families and communities over the course of lifetimes. Our belief is that health is a state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of specific disease. Lutheran Medical Center believes in a continuous and comprehensive model of health care delivery that forms the basis of contemporary medicine.
Lutheran Medical Center strives to give each of our residents a full understanding of the family physician's multiple roles, a full portfolio of knowledge and skills with which to practice excellent family medicine in any setting and an eager interest in scholarly research. Moreover, Lutheran's family medicine faculty aim to instill in their residents an abiding appreciation for the principle of life-long personal and professional development and an unwavering commitment to individual, family, and community health.
The Family Medicine residency program is a three-year, ACGME- and AOA-accredited program in a clinical department that fully integrates adult, pediatric, obstetrical, gynecologic and surgical patients. The curriculum is designed to expose residents to all areas of medicine needed to provide comprehensive and continuous care to their patients. Family Medicine residents manage a mixture of hospitalized private and residency-program patients under the supervision of faculty physicians.
